Sad Birthday

So today was my birthday. Birthday's haven't been easy for me since I was 10 and some lunatic Muslim tried to assassinate Pope John Paul II. Being a child going to Catholic School, this was a BIG event. I remember Sister John Catherine coming to our classroom and saying "Our Holy Father has been shot." Sister Catherine Regina herded all of us students off the chapel to pray for him. I remember how sad we all were.
I think that was the end of "child-like" innocence, and excitement surrounding birthday's for me. Since then birthday's have been really low-key for me.
One thing I could always count on was a card and phone call from my aunt Maxine, my grand mother's sister. This is the second birthday without her. Several times through out the day, I thought to myself, "wonder what time she will call". Only to face the reality that no there will be no more phone calls.
