Elvis

So tonight I am watching Larry King Live from Graceland, talking with Pricilla Presley about the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. THIRTY YEARS, for Elvis fans the world over, I know that is really hard to grasp, at least it is for me. When I heard the news that Elvis had died we were on our way from Middlesboro Kentucky's Daniel Boone Clinic following the ambulance that carried my grandmother, to Knoxville Tennessee's Fort Sanders Hospital. I was six, and was sitting in the backseat dozing and woke up to the radio playing continuous Elvis music. To this day I still think of that when the anniversary rolls around.
Fast forward to five years ago when I was pregnant with my son. We were driving to one of my OB/GYN appointments and "Kentucky Rain" came on the radio. About halfway through the song, I just started weeping. I don't mean the simple shedding of a few tears, I mean full-blown gasping sobs. When my mom and my husband tried to find out what was wrong, all I could say was "Elvis". My mom finally said, "It's because Elvis is dead isn't it?" All I could do was nod. Here I am 32 years old, married, and pregnant, so very far removed from the little girl sitting in the back seat 26 years earlier, but there it was.
So Elvis, it's been 30 years and I still miss you.

UPDATE---Just saw a press conference given by the group VanHalen, announcing their upcoming tour. One of the reporters asked them something about this being the 30th anniversary of Elvis' passing. "Diamond" David Lee Roth in his usual cockiness said "IF there was a God, Elvis would be alive and all of the impersonators would be dead." I absolutely LOVE the sentiment. Sad that poor Diamond Dave doesn't believe in God, but maybe someone could work on him.
