These people are a hate group plain and simple. If they think that they will convert anyone to their brand of pseudo-religion, they are wrong. I truly don't understand what them protesting at soldiers funerals has to do with God. To my way of thinking it is comparing apples and oranges.
They came to our town this summer when we lost a young man to an IED in Iraq.
Our town leaders made the Westboro members purchase a parade permit.
Even though we live in the buckle of the Bible Belt, where we have more churches than people to fill them, thank the Lord that they were not welcomed here.
God Bless the citizens of London and Laurel County, because when the news broke that the Westboro Church was coming to protest, we came up with a "protest" of our own. Every citizen who had a flag was welcomed and the good people of Laurel lined the sidewalks on both sides of the street with American Flags the two blocks from the funeral home to the cemetery.
Since the Phelps' gang had to purchase their parade permit, the local sheriff would only allow them to congregate in a parking lot across the street from the funeral home. Fortunately the patriots out numbered them and blocked the view the Phelps' had of the mourners.
These people are wrong, hateful, spiteful, mean, and I am overjoyed that the wonderful jury in Baltimore had the sense enough to see it and to try to stop it with a huge financial punishment.
Hiding behind God as an excuse to spew hatred and bigotry is PURE EVIL, plain and simple.

They almost came to protest in a town near here a few years ago! Some biker group (I can't remember the name) was going to do the same thing, block the group's view of the funeral procession and therefore the family's view of them.
Now I have to honestly wonder. I am NOT at all saying there aren't Christians out there with these views, I'm sure there are many. However, I have to wonder if these people aren't actually Christian-HATERS with a bent to make other people hate Christians. I mean, they are so not Christian in any way, shape or form, but they preach a hateful Biblical message.
What do you think?
Yes, the bikers came here too. It was a sight to make you proud to be an American.
Stacey, you raise a really good point. I hadn't really thought about them being Christian haters. They have an agenda, but who knows what it is. From what I have read about them everyone that goes to that church is related to Fred Phelps. To me it sounds rather cult like.
the actions of your town's people brought tears to my eyes. Amazing how most people generally do not only the right thing, morally, but the ABSOLUTELY right thing. I am giving them a standing ovation, here in my living room : )
